# Search chats and contacts

> Find a customer's chat by their name or number, or filter chats by tag.

## Find a chat

1. In [**Inbox > Chats**](https://app.soosh.io/chat), click **Search contacts...** at the top of the list.
2. Type part of the customer's name or number. Spaces, dashes and `+` in a
   number don't matter.

The list shows matching chats as you type. Search looks at names and numbers,
not at what was said in the chat.

## Filter by tag

1. Click **Filter by tags** (the funnel icon) next to the search box.
2. Click one or more tags, like **VIP**. Click **Clear** to show all chats
   again.

The tabs above the list filter too: **Unread**, **Mine** (assigned to you) and
**Expiring** (the 24-hour window is running out).

## Find a contact

In [**Contacts**](https://app.soosh.io/contacts), use **Search contacts...** the same way, and **Filter by tag**
to narrow the list.

The **Search…** box at the top of the menu (**Ctrl K**, or **⌘K** on a Mac)
finds pages, settings and actions, not customers.
