# Use variables in a template

> Fill in each customer's name, order number or other details when the template is sent.

Source: https://docs.soosh.io/guides/templates/use-variables-in-a-template/

A variable is a blank in the template, like `{{1}}`, that's filled in for each
customer when you send it.

## Add a variable

1. In **Message text**, put the cursor where the detail goes and click **Add
   variable**. It adds the next number: `{{1}}`, then `{{2}}`.
2. Under **Examples for your variables**, enter a realistic example for each
   one, like *Priya* or *BLF-20418*. Meta reads the message with them. Never
   use a real customer's details.

For example:

```text
Hi {{1}}, your order {{2}} has shipped and should reach you in 2 to 3 days.
```

## Rules

Soosh points out these problems before Meta sees them:

- **Not at the very start or end.** `Hi {{1}}, your order is ready.` is fine;
  a message that starts or ends with a variable is rejected.
- **Each number once.** Use `{{1}}` in one place only.
- **One kind of variable.** Use numbers (`{{1}}`) or names (`{{name}}`), not
  both in one template.
- **At most one in a text header.**

## Result

When you send the template, you fill each variable: from the customer's
details in a campaign (like **Contact name**), or by typing it in a chat.
